6% of prostate biopsies results in infections and the rate is increasing

Minimizing bacterial transfer is a basic principle of protection against infections. Still, it is not used for one of the most common of medical instruments – the needle. Why? With the introduction of penicillin, patients have been protected against infections and there has been no need for technical development. Today, infections from needle punctures are alarmingly rising due to increased antibiotic resistance. Xaga Surgical develops safe needles for the post antibiotic era.

The Forsvall Needle

The idea of our needle is to effectively reduce the risk of severe sepsis by virtually eliminating bacterial transfer upon insertion. Compared to the needles used today, ex vivo puncture tests in the human colon have demonstrated a 96% reduction of the bacterial translocation with our needle.

The FORSVALL NEEDLE is expected to significantly increase safety during diagnose of prostate cancer and other diseases by reducing the risk of getting sepsis/infection after a biopsy. The estimated annual savings due to infection reduction when using our needles in over 200M€ in emergency cost for prostate cancer diagnosis alone.

On the basis of the existing patented technology of Xaga Surgical’s biopsy needle, our company is in the perfect position to exploit the market opportunity for a safe, cheap and easy-to-use biopsy needle that aims to reduce the risk of infection – a task no competitor has been able to succeed with.
